The Yellow Brick Bank was once Shepherdstown's main bank for 69 years. It is the former location of Jefferson Security Bank. Constructed in 1906 in the "Beaux Arts" style of architecture, the building has rolled tin scroll work adorning its outer walls.
In 1976 the building was purchased from the bank and turned into The Yellow Brick Bank Restaurant. The owner named the restaurant before discovering that paint, yellow or otherwise, would not adhere to the glazed surface of the bricks. The name somehow survived. The restaurant has since steadily grown in popularity, thanks in part to the efforts of Executive Chef Jeff Mcgee and the dedicated kitchen and floor staffs.
An addition was made in 1997 to house a new kitchen and a new pub room. The exterior was made to flow with the original lines of the establishment. The installation of a wood burning hearth has increased the quality and popularity of the restaurant. Several pieces in the pub add to the distinction of the Yellow Brick Bank Restaurant. The ceiling is a replica of a Cathedral ceiling at Glenstal Abbey, a Benedictine monastery with a small attached boy's school, located on a 500 acre estate near Limerick, Ireland. The colorful, hanging globes are from a Merry-Go-Round in Toronto, Canada. The Yellow Brick Bank is truly unequivocal for its intriguing atmosphere and its extraordinary cuisine. Although hidden in the West Virginia hills, it is a restaurant of quality, likable and extending itself far beyond the ambitiousness of most restaurants within close proximity of Washington.
